If you've been following my Once Upon A Time series, you know that I used to live in Arizona. This particular wedding between Nic and Yesenia--or Jessi as I knew her best--was held at the same church where I met my husband. Jessi was a part of our youth group. So this wedding is so special to me and it was an honor to be able to travel for this wedding.
Saturday of the wedding, I got into my rented Yaris and drove to First Southern Baptist Church of Avondale, which was just how I remembered it and where this Phoenix, AZ wedding took place. While I waited for the wedding party to arrive, I took pictures of the building and decided on a spot for the bridal portraits. Slowly, people started pulling into the parking lot, some faces I recognized and others I didn't. After a brief reunion, we got straight into it. Jessi got all of her wedding attire out for me to take detail shots of while she got to work putting up the ceremony backdrop. I absolutely adored her details and the sentimental value attached to each piece of her wedding day look. The jewelry she wore was Nic's grandmother's, her veil was the same one that her sister Ana wore for her wedding, and her shoes were bought by family friends.
I've always said that the wedding preparations are probably my favorite part of the day to photograph. I love documenting those candid moments that fill the day with so much meaning and anticipation. Watching the interactions between Jessi, Nic and their family and friends was so special and really warmed my heart. There was such an emphasis on family throughout the day. I honestly can't tell you how many group pictures I took because there were so many. Everyone wanted a picture with the newlyweds and It was wonderful! Jessi and Nic are surrounded by love.
The ceremony was officiated by Jessi's pastor, Numa Gomez, in the church sanctuary with time for pictures with guests immediately following. We then headed to the recreation center for the reception, where I ate possibly the best tacos I've ever had. After more group pictures and the cake cutting, I took the happy couple outside so they could have a brief moment to get their portraits done. They were so sweet and gentle and the early evening sun cast such a romantic light on them. They were perfect. I'm so excited for Jessi and Nic and their new life together!
