A WEDDING WITH FAMILY PICNIC VIBES
In September, on the last Saturday day of summer, Chris and Sarah were married at Monoroeville Park surrounded by family, friends, and gorgeous fall colors. With lawn games and an open BBQ buffet, this evening was relaxed and felt like a big family picnic. It was a beautiful day for a beautiful couple.
After spending most of the afternoon with my family, I headed out to Sarah's parent's house, where she had just finished up having her hair and makeup done. Despite all the activity going on, the dogs sat calmly in the living room and didn't seem at all interested in what was happening or who was coming and going. After a few group shots with her bridesmaids, Sarah went into the basement to get dressed with the assistance of her mom. I hung around with the bridesmaids and helped tie straps when asked. Once everyone was ready, we made the 5 minute drive to Monroeville Community Park, where the wedding would take place.
My car GPS actually took me to a shelter that was further into the park and once I realized I was not in the right spot, I spun around started looking for the obvious signs of a wedding. It was a large shelter with a large group of people gathered underneath, and I honestly don't know how I'd missed it. I quickly found Chris and said hi, before he got pulled away by some guest, so while I waited for Sarah to arrive, I began getting some detail shots of the space. The tables were decorated with vases full of hot pink and purple flowers. Their vibrant color scheme was one of my favorites of the year.
When Sarah arrived, the guests quieted down and I positioned myself for the processional. I looked up at Chris and he looked nervous, but then he smiled when Sarah started walking toward him. Once Sarah and Christ were standing together under the arch, their faces were alight with smiles and laughter.
After formal portraits and big family group pictures, the reception was held under the same shelter. I was called over to the BBQ stand where there was a suckling roast pig waiting to be cut up and served. Chris had the honor of making the first cut. I'd never seen a full roast pig or eaten one before, so this was a neat first for me. The catering was by Q&M's Fish, Chik & Ribs and they did an amazing job. The food was set out in a big picnic potluck style and everything was delicious. After dinner were the speeches given by the maid of honor and best man. There were many traditional elements to the reception, but to me, the highlights of the reception included the lawn games, selfie station, and guests mingling in the golden light of the setting sun. There were a few moments of sudden and intense downpour, but it didn't stop the party. Guests rocked out and danced throughout the night.
Chris and Sarah met each other years ago on New Years Eve at a family party in Pittsburgh. Chris and Sarah saw each other across the room and suddenly believed in love at first sight. Perhaps it was that he was taller than all the other men in the room, or the fishnet tights she was wearing, or maybe just fate. Whatever it was, Chris and Sarah hit it off at that party and played beer pong throughout the night.
Three years after that first meeting, Chris proposed to Sarah on New years Eve in the presence of their dogs and she said yes. She told me that the only reason they didn't plan a New Years Eve wedding was because she hates the cold. That's a pretty good reason in my opinion.
Chris and Sarah, are a perfect example of opposites attract. He's calm and reserved and she's bubbly and outgoing. Their strengths and weaknesses compliment each other. Sarah described their life together as being full of laughter and fun. For them, it doesn't matter what they're doing as long as they're doing it together.
I not only got to see how they acted together during their engagement session, but also got to witness their love on their wedding day and it was a beautiful thing.
