What's Happening?

38 years ago my parents got married on Valentine's Day. They thought it was romantic. However, as the years rolled by and their family grew, my parents soon discovered how difficult it was to find a babysitter for their anniversary because everyone was out on Valentine's Day. So while they would probably suggest that you don't get married on Valentine's Day, it is still one of the most popular days to get engaged, in fact, my older brother and his wife got engaged on Valentine's Day. There will be around 6 million proposals this coming February 14th and more than last year's $23.9 billion spent on gifts. Valentine's Day is a big day and, for many, a big commitment. It's a day of exchanging gifts, planning fancy nights out, romantic getaways, and popping the big question.

It's the day of love and romance.

While love and romance obviously aren't limited to just February 14th, it is nice to have a day that is specifically dedicated to showing your appreciation and devotion to the one you love. Some may say that Valentine's Day has become too commercialized, and maybe in some ways, that's true. Yet the statistics show just how popular the love day is and I imagine there are very few people who are upset about a Valentine's Day proposal.

For me, I can always count on my husband to bring me a nice box of chocolates, possibly roses, and maybe a new book. I love reading. I've been getting lost in books and fairytales since I was a little girl and it's one of the things that first attracted Richie to me. He liked my imagination and the big dreams that I had. On our very first date, after dinner, Richie took me to Barns & Noble. He still takes me and still buys me all the books I want. It's one of the ways in which he shows me love.
